DAYTONA BEACH Fla. – A full decade after he won his first, NASCAR’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won his second Daytona 500; the 56th annual running of the “Great American Race” at Daytona International Speedway Sunday.
After a long rain delay, Earnhardt took control in the closing laps and held off a hard charging Denny Hamlin for his second Daytona 500 victory.
“Man, winning this race is the greatest feeling that you can feel in the sport, aside from obviously accepting the trophy for the championship,” Earnhardt said. “I didn’t know if I’d ever get a chance to feel that again and it feels just as good, if not better than the first because of how hard we tried year after year after year funning second all those years and wondering why and what we needed to do.
