Dale Earnhardt Jr. seemed to be having an almost magical season going . In the first three races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Earnhardt had finished third, third and fourth. That magical start to the season however came to an abrupt end Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Earnhardt started ** and was running competitively inside the top 10. On lap 117 of 312 though his day started to come apart.  During a pit stop on caution number four after Sam Hornish Jr. lost a tire and spun coming off turn 2, Earnhardt was penalized by NASCAR for speeding on pit road and sent to the rear of the field.  On lap 181 while in 21st spot, Earnhardt’s Chevy lost a right rear tire coming out of turn 1. The car was sent into the wall and spun down onto the backstretch.
