With solid finishes, he’s been leading in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver’s standings since the third race of the season at Las Vegas. Saturday night though, Greg Biffle was able to score his first win of the season and secure his spot as a contender for the 2012 season championship.

Biffle was able to save his equipment late in Saturday night’s Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, and with just over 30 laps to go slid past Jimmie Johnson for the lead. From there Biffle was able to hold off Johnson, who had been dominating to that point and go on to score his first victory since Kansas 2010. Biffle broke a 49 race winless streak, but more importantly after a lackluster 2011, can now be considered among the favorites to win it all in 2012.

Unlike last year, Biffle credits his team which has preformed nearly flawlessly to this point in the season.

“That gives me huge confidence,” Biffle said after the win Saturday night. “I knew that from about the third race, that these guys, the guys that Matt (crew chief Matt Puccia) had put together, we kind of held the handcuffs on them a little bit last year until we got to the end of the season, and he revamped the entire team over the winter. “ MORE>>>
