Seven-time NASCAR champion and Legacy Motor Club co-owner Jimmie Johnson announced Monday a new strategic partnership with Knighthead Capital Management, marking a significant shift in the team’s trajectory. With this move, Legacy Motor Club is gearing up to expand its footprint in the racing world, aiming for more wins, more fans, and a larger presence on the global stage.
The deal sees Knighthead acquiring a minority stake in the team, with Johnson now positioned as Legacy Motor Club’s majority owner. This solidifies his leadership and places him squarely at the helm of the team’s future. Johnson expressed gratitude to outgoing co-owner Maury Gallagher, who will step back from daily operations and transition into an ambassadorial role.
“I really have to thank Maury Gallagher for giving me the opportunity within the ownership space,” Johnson said. “He’s been an outstanding partner, mentor, and friend. I’ve learned so much from him. As his professional career takes a different path, he can focus more on family and enjoying life while we carry this team forward.”
Gallagher’s tenure is nothing short of remarkable. After leading GMS Racing to 71 wins and five championships across the NASCAR Truck and ARCA Menards Series, he acquired Richard Petty Motorsports in 2021, forming Petty GMS Racing. The team found early success, including a thrilling win at the 2022 Southern 500 with Erik Jones behind the wheel. Through it all, the iconic No. 43 car, made legendary by team ambassador Richard Petty, remained at the heart of the operation.
For Johnson, the partnership with Knighthead represents an opportunity to take Legacy Motor Club to the next level. “The partnership with Knighthead is a game-changer,” Johnson said. “Their expertise in navigating complex investment opportunities and success in sports will provide us with the resources and guidance to push for championships and solidify our place in NASCAR for years to come.” Jimmie Johnson Becomes Majority Owner of Legacy Motor Club
Cal Wells III, Legacy Motor Club’s CEO, credited Johnson for his ability to attract top-tier partnerships and guide the team forward. “Jimmie’s leadership and partnership-minded business approach remain central to Legacy Motor Club’s success,” Wells said. “This collaboration with Knighthead brings new opportunities to enhance our competitiveness, grow our legacy, and offer fans an unparalleled experience.”
Knighthead, founded in 2008, has a diverse investment portfolio that includes ventures in motorsports, automotive design, and even football clubs. Co-founder Tom Wagner shared his enthusiasm for the partnership: “NASCAR’s rich history and Legacy Motor Club’s ambition make this a unique opportunity. We’re excited to collaborate with Jimmie and Cal to drive the team forward on the track and within the broader racing community.”
With the partnership now official, Legacy Motor Club is ready to hit the ground running for the 2025 season. It all begins at Bowman Gray Stadium for The Clash on February 2, followed by the season-opening Daytona 500 on February 16. Buckle up—big things are on the horizon.
