1953: Lee Petty prevails in the first race in NASCAR’s top series at Richmond (Va.) Fairgrounds’ half-mile dirt track. Dick Rathman finishes second in a ’52 Hudson behind Petty’s ’53 Dodge with pole-starter Buck Baker third. Richmond International Raceway, which hosts its next race April 28, is celebrating 60 years of NASCAR racing this season.
