CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1, met with members of the media at ISM Raceway and discussed the new layout at ISM Raceway, the challenges of restarting in a new spot on the track and many other topics. Full Transcript:
NOW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ON TRACK A LITTLE BIT, HAVE YOU GOTTEN MORE OF A SENSE OF HOW RESTARTS WILL GO AND HOW THE FINISH MIGHT GO?
“Yeah, the track to me is the same, which is a good thing, I think this is a great track that we come to. I think the visual of what you see if probably the biggest difference and what I see, coming off Turn 2 I guess is what it is now is a little odd, but I think the speed is going to be so slow for those restarts, I don’t think that is going to be an issue being in the corner like that. So, being in front of the fans and they will be able to see it, so that will be good.”
WITH THE TRACK BEING THE ‘SAME’ WILL IT BE DIFFICULT FOR YOU TO COMMUNICATE TO YOUR SPOTTER/CREW CHIEF WITH THE TURNS BEING FLIPPED LIKE THAT OR ARE YOU JUST GOING TO USE THE OLD NUMBERS?
“I feel like we have probably used the old numbers more than we have the new ones this weekend. Just so used to that, but yeah, I’m sure as time goes you will make sure you switch over at some point. For now, we are all being very descriptive in which end we are talking about just to make sure we are on the same page.”
DOES THE NO. 4 CAR PENALTY GIVE YOUR TEAM A LITTLE MORE LIFE NOW THAT YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE TO WIN AND COULD MATHEMATICALLY ADVANCE INTO THE FINAL 4 ON POINTS?
“Well, someone’s misfortunate shouldn’t be a morale boost for your team first off, yeah, we are in a position anyway where I feel like we have to win and honestly, that needs to be the mentality anyway, because if you were to make it to Homestead next week you are going to have to win down there, so you might as well embrace it and like it and move on.”
WHAT IS PIT ROAD LIKE SINCE IT’S BEING RECONFIGURED AND HOW HARD IS IT GOING TO BE NOT TO BE CAUGHT SPEEDING?
“It’s definitely different for sure and I think you will see a lot of teams practicing that tomorrow just because all the timing lines are different and the corner is really sharp in certain spots and it kind of opens back up another section, so it’s an odd shaped pit road and very wide too. So, yeah, I think everybody will spend some time on that tomorrow. We really didn’t have enough time to today with that practice and then we were a little late getting going. Yeah, I didn’t really have a chance to mess with it much.”
JOEY LOGANO SAYS THAT BASED ON HOW HE HAS RAN LATELY HE IS THE FAVORITE TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
“I mean I don’t really care what he thinks.”
