1924: NASCAR legend Curtis Turner is born. One of the sport’s most charismatic personalities and determined drivers, Turner won 17 races in NASCAR’s premier series and dominated the old convertible series with 38 wins in 79 starts. Turner, who affectionately called friends and strangers alike “Pops,” died in an aviation crash in 1970.
