Three Sprint Cup crew chiefs—Kevin Manion (Jamie McMurray), Brian Pattie (Juan Pablo Montoya) and Tony Gibson (Ryan Newman)—answer three questions.
Sporting News: What would you do with a real day off, where no one at the shop could reach you?
Manion: If it was a week, I’d definitely go somewhere with white sand, a nice beach, where somebody brought you some adult beverages. A single day off? During the springtime, I really enjoy working around the house, planting flowers and mulching and trimming trees and making the yard look really nice.
Pattie: I’d take my kids to Disney World.
Gibson: Right now it’s turkey season, so I would be out in the woods turkey hunting.
Sporting News: Which race would you most like to win?
Manion: Darlington. I just like the history of the track. I really enjoy watching races there. It’s a real drivers track. You’ve really got to have nerve to get up on the wheel and do it there.
Pattie: Daytona. Home state for both myself and Juan.
Gibson: Right now, I’d say Darlington. I’ve won that race before (as car chief) with Jeff Gordon, and that’s just an awesome racetrack and a great race to win. It’s such a tough old racetrack, and any time you can win there, it’s pretty impressive.
Sporting News: What’s your favorite pair of shoes?
Manion: If I didn’t have to wear shoes, I wouldn’t. I like bare feet. Always have.
Pattie: My Ecco track shoes because they’re the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had.
Gibson: My favorite shoes are flip-flops because you can kick ‘em off and chill out at any time.
