DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Pressed into service for ailing Richard Childress Racing teammate Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer practiced Harvick’s Budweiser Shootout car Thursday at Daytona — but not for long. Bowyer was a casualty in a seven-car wreck triggered by contact between the No. 11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin and the No. 5 Chevy of Mark Martin.
Harvick will use a backup car in the Shootout.
“If he wasn’t sick, he is now,” Bowyer joked Friday at a press appearance for Coca-Cola.
Nevertheless, the brief stint in Harvick’s car gave Bowyer’s confidence a boost as he prepares for the Feb. 14 Daytona 500.
“His car was very fast — I can tell you that,” Bowyer said. “It gave me a good feeling about my 500 car and our chances at the biggest race of the year. So I’m excited about the way our cars drove, handled and ran — the speed of them.”
