Roush-Fenway Racing driver Jamie McMurray is trying to get money from bank accounts frozen due to a fraud investigation.
According to a brief filed in federal court in Texas, the money is used in part to pay team expenses including salaries.
The investment accounts have been frozen as part of a multi-billion dollar fraud case against the Stanford Group filed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission in February. The Group stands accused of running a Ponzi scheme where early investors who had purchased certificates of deposit from the Antigua based Stanford International Bank were paid from funds received from later investors.
The investor’s accounts were frozen on February 16th. While many of the accounts have been unfrozen by a court appointed receiver since then McMurray’s isn’t among them.
According to the filing McMurray needs the cash from the accounts not only to pay team expenses but his income taxes, which are due on April 15th.
