A DUI charge has been filed against NASCAR team owner Billy Ballew after his arrest at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., AJC.com reports.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution site said Ballew confirmed in a telephone interview that he was arrested Wednesday night at the track.
Henry County police said a sheriff’s sergeant arrested Ballew at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. He was jailed on a driving under the influence charge and later released, the site said.
Ballew told AJC.com that he was driving a sponsor from his condominium to the passenger’s motor home when “an irate cop” wearing a cap marked “security” stopped him. The condo and the mobile home are both on the track property.
Ballew said he refused to take a breathalyzer test, but acknowledged that he was carrying a mixed drink in the car when he was pulled over. “It was only one drink. I was not drunk,” Ballew told the newspaper site. “I was on Atlanta Motor Speedway property. I was not on the highway.”
Ballew, a former driver, owns a Truck series team that is scheduled to compete this weekend with driver Kyle Busch.
