Team owner Jack Roush must have noticed that Drew Blickensderfer won seven races as crew chief for Carl Edwards’ No. 60 Nationwide Series Ford after taking over for Pierre Kuettel in June.
Accordingly, Blickensderfer has earned a promotion to the Sprint Cup Series, where he’ll serve as crew chief for Matt Kenseth’s No. 17 Ford next year. Blickensderfer replaces Chip Bolin, who will return to his role as team engineer.
“We are really looking forward to Drew coming on board with the No. 17 DEWALT team,” Kenseth said Wednesday in a release from the team. “Drew brings a great work ethic and high level of enthusiasm to our team. He has been waiting for the opportunity to become a crew chief in the Sprint Cup Series and I know he’ll make the most of it.
“I had the chance to work with Drew for a couple of years in the Nationwide Series and he is one of the hardest working guys in the garage. He has a passion for the sport, and I know he will be a great addition to our No. 17 team.”
Blickensderfer was Kenseth’s crew chief in the Nationwide Series from the start of the 2007 season until moving to Edwards’ car in mid-2008. Roush Fenway has not named a replacement for Blickensderfer for Edwards’ Nationwide Series car.
Edwards won the series title in 2007 with Kuettel on the pit box and finished second to Clint Bowyer in 2008. Edwards plans to compete for the Nationwide title again in 2009.
