Tony Stewart and Matt Yocum saluted the best, the boldest and the funniest moments of the 2008 NASCAR season last week in New York. They also presented Stewie Special Lifetime Achievement Awards to Roger Penske & Richard Childress. And they were honored to give this year’s Golden Stewie Award to Darrell Waltrip.
Among the stars on the live broadcast from the SIRIUS Studios were Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, Kevin & DeLana Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Childress, Roger Penske, Regan Smith and Ford Martin.
The winners were determined by fan voting.
Best Original Drama — For year’s most dramatic moment or sequence.
Winner: Tony Stewart announces his departure from JGR to form Stewart-Haas Racing
Best Stunt Sequence (Hal Needham Award) — For year’s most spectacular crash.
Winner: Michael McDowell’s tumbling, bouncing fiery crash during qualifying at Texas
Best Original Comedy — For year’s most entertaining “incident” or occurrence.
Winner: “Yellow Line” fever: Debate at Talladega concerning controversial finish
Bonehead Move of the Year
Winner: Edwards pushes Kevin Harvick in Charlotte trying to discuss Talladega “pansy” comments by Harvick
‘I Got Dumped’ Award — For year’s most memorable on- or off-track bumping.
Winner: Kyle Busch vs. Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Richmond. Busch takes out Dale Jr. in the spring; Dale Jr. accidentally overdrives a corner and gets into Busch in the fall race
Best Engineering and Special Effects (Smokey Yunick Award) — For year’s most creative — and ultimately illegal — modifications to a racecar.
Winner: JGR Nationwide cars caught with magnets behind accelerator at Michigan
Best Driver2Crew Chatter Exchange — For year’s most memorable driver-to-pit crew communication.
Winner: Clint Bowyer declares Michael Waltrip “the worst driver in NASCAR” at Bristol
Best Vocal Performance — For year’s most memorable quote or sound bite
Winner: Carl Edwards’ post race comments on ESPN describing his desperation off-the-wall move at Kansas and where he learned it.
