AJ Allmendinger didn’t stay unemployed for long. Michael Waltrip Racing officials announced Monday that Allmendinger will drive the team’s No. 00 Toyota in Saturday’s Bank of America 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

--(Cont'd From Front Page)-- MWR officials replaced Michael McDowell after he failed to qualify at Kansas Speedway two weeks ago. Kenny Wallace drove the No. 00 to a 12th-place finish Sunday at Talladega that moved the team 39 points out of the top 35 in the owner standings, the cutoff to be guaranteed a starting spot in the field.

“Our singular focus with the No. 00 team is to reposition the team in the top 35 in owners points and be there in end,” team owner Michael Waltrip said in a news release. “Kenny Wallace did a tremendous job for us at Talladega and recorded the team’s best finish of the season. I know AJ will do a great job for us, too.”

Allmendinger’s last race with Red Bull Racing was at Kansas, where he finished ninth. He started 27th and finished 20th in the May race at Charlotte after winning the Sprint Showdown preliminary race to make it into the all-star race.
